House Of David: delaria + bowie = jazz

Kitty Drexel READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Lea Delaria is currently famous for portraying Carrie "Big Boo" Black on Netflix series, "Orange is the New Black." "House of David" is her vanity project of Bowie glam rock classics reinterpreted as 70's-era jazz. Delaria fans will enjoy this album very much. The intersection of OITNB and Bowie fans may find it interesting. It is highly probable that hardcore fans of Bowie will not find it to their preference.

Delaria has a strong, loud voice. The arrangements on "House of David" are unique. The production value is very high. Her jazz band is excellent. Unfortunately, her interpretations aren't very interesting. It lacks the style and personal touches that would make these songs her own. The band takes more liberties, leaves more of an impression that Delaria does. This is frustrating because it is easy to hear that Delaria is capable of giving us more.

Lea Delaria's career spans theatre and musical genres. She is an openly gay comic who has appeared on "Californication," "The Oblongs," "One LIfe to Live," and others. She has five records on the Warner Jazz and Classics label. Her book "Lea's Book of Rules for the World" is in its third generation of print and is available through Bantam Doubleday and Dell.

David Bowie is a rock icon with a career spanning decades. If you don't know who he is, shame on you.
