On Friday, February 27, The Encore Repertory Company will perform "The Vagina Monologues" at the Stadium Theatre.

An Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone, "The Vagina Monologues" introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a vagina workshop participant, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and a feminist happy to have found a man who "liked to look at it."

"When I was first approached about doing the show I was unsure. After some research and listening to my cast mates rehearse, this show has begun to take on personal meaning for me," said cast member Betsy Johnson. "It's not just a show about vaginas, but about women discovering who they are and what that means, smashing a perspective people have and redefining it. It is a message everyone needs to hear."

Through the distinct experiences shared by these women, "The Vagina Monologues" takes its audience on both a moving and comical tour of the ultimate forbidden zone, while celebrating female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Be advised that this show contains adult content in the form of mature subject matter.

"I love this show because as women, we have all had different life experiences, both good and bad. We have a tendency to think we are alone and this show reaches out and connects us. It makes us a community," added Ashley Lopes.

Cast member Kathy Fortier said the show was important to her because it not only raised awareness, but also allowed them to speak for those who can't. And Eve Lajoie added that being part of the show had been an incredible experience, with some monologues being humorous and others dealing with very heavy issues, noting, "Eve Ensler puts a spotlight on vaginas, and they are happy to tell all!"

"I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in this production of 'The Vagina Monologues.' I saw the show a few years ago at the Stadium Theater, and fell in love with it," said Kim Alarie. "It is a well-written compilation of women's stories, revolving around themes that express female sexuality in such a way that will make you both laugh and cry. It is truly a dynamic show, and I am very proud in having the opportunity to be part of such a talented cast of women."

Partial proceeds will be donated to The Sojourner House and VDAY. The Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre offers outstanding local, regional, and internationally renowned live entertainment in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

"The Vagina Monologues" will be performed at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 27 at The Stadium Theatre, 28 Monument Square, Woonsocket, RI. Admission is $21 for all seating. Tickets are available at the Stadium Theatre Box Office or by calling 401-762-4545 and online at www.stadiumtheatre.com.
