Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Donald Trump: From Bromance to Blowmance

Wednesday Aug 8, 2018

He's been called the "toughest sheriff in America." His harsh immigration policies led him to be convicted of federal crimes, which were overturned by President Donald Trump in a controversial pardon last August.

But Sheriff Joe Arpaio, now running for Senate in Arizona, finds himself taking back some comments after he was pranked by Sacha Baron Cohen on the comedian's Showtime series "Who Is America" this past Sunday night.

According to the Washington Post Cohen plays a Finnish YouTube star with the handle "OMGWhizzBoyOMG!" in the segment.

"The fake YouTuber somehow persuaded Arpaio to participate in an 'unboxing' video, ostensibly to reveal the characters in a package of Shopkins - the wildly popular and tiny collectible toy figures - while he interviewed him about his career and friendship with President Trump."

Arpaio then carried on a gun control debate with the tiny plastic figure, called "D'lish the Donut."

"Delicious Donut, you have to understand that you have to follow the Constitution and the law and allow people to have guns," Arpaio told the figure, the Washington Post reported.

"Cohen offered D'lish Donut's reply: 'But I want the guns to be taken back because they are dangerous!'

"Arpaio leaned in toward the small toy. 'The bad guys are going to get their guns. It's gonna kill you,' he said, pointing his finger at D'lish Donut. 'I'm hoping that somebody else in there has a gun and will shoot that person before he shoots you.'"

Cohen (as D'lish Donut) told Arpaio he had 43 guns and was collecting them for the upcoming race war.

But the oddest moment in the segment came when Cohen turned the subject to Arpaio's friendship with Donald Trump and how far he would take their bromance.

First Arpaio praised Trump, calling him "A great man. I have been with him, introduce him, from day one. From all the campaign."

The following is the transcript of what followed:

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): Is Donald Trump, very rich?

Arpaio: He's got money, but he doesn't act like he's rich.

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): Do you think President Trump, he's your friend. Do you think he might have had a golden shower?

Arpaio: It would surprise me.

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): I would love to have a golden shower. Do you think there is any way you could get President Trump to give me a golden shower?

Arpaio: In Finland?

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): Or in America? In Washington? In the White House?

Arpaio: I will tell you one thing, if he sees this, and the way you are thinking, he's going to like you, because you think like he thinks. And this is very, very interesting. And let me tell you that I became sheriff when I was 60 years old.

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): My first job was a hand job from my mother and it was newspapers. What was your first hand job?

Arpaio: Let me say this, me, what ever I did in my life, I always did that 'extra' that gets me in trouble sometimes.

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): You wanted to give the best hand job possible -

Arpaio: Extra sometimes...

Baron (as OMGWhizzBoyOMG): Oh, so if Donald Trump pulls you up after this after this and says, 'Sheriff Joe, I want to offer you an amazing blow job.

Arpaio: I may have to say yes.

In the days following, Arpaio claims he didn't have any idea what Cohen was talking about.

In an interview published on Monday in the Phoenix New Times, Arpaio "says he had no idea he was agreeing in a televised interview that he'd consider having oral sex with President Trump.

"And he thought, when talk to turned to 'golden showers,' that he and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen were discussing a shower made of gold."

He "never agreed" to consider oral sex with Trump, the Phoenix New Times report continued. "He seemed to be unaware of news coverage about his statements to Cohen. Phoenix New Times informed him that a transcript of the back-and-forth with Cohen, and especially the part about a sex act, had become the headline in news outlets across the country.

"'I didn't even know what he was talking about,' Arpaio said. 'I couldn't even hear what the hell he was saying ... He had a bad accent. He was twisting things around.'"
