'Drag Race' Winner Sasha Velour Created Google's Marlene Dietrich Doodle

Wednesday Dec 27, 2017

Google is celebrating Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich's 116th birthday today and is doing so with a doodle, created by none other than "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 9 winner Sasha Velour.

The German actress and singer was born Dec. 27, 1901, and died in 1992 at 90. After acting in silent films in the 20s, Dietrich starred in a number of Hollywood films in the 30s, including "The Blue Angel," "Shanghai Express" and "Desire."

Velour, who impersonated the actress during Snatch Game on "Drag Race," tweeted about designing the Google doodle.

She also spoke to the search engine giant about her art.

"She was a wild original!" she told Google. "Despite the pressures of the time, she followed her own course, especially in terms of politics and gender.

"As a drag queen, that's particularly inspiring to me. Plus, she just had this power to every role she's mysterious and strong, brilliant," she added. "That's what I aspire to be when I step on the stage."
