Boston man Eddie Smith is due to be arraigned in Roxbury on assault and battery, mayhem, and committing a hate crime charges "after he allegedly hit a 25-year-old man in the head with a snow shovel and slashed his eye with a box cutter" Tuesday, 7 News Boston reports.

The attack is being charged as a hate crime, as the victim, identified only as Victor, told 7 News: "Whenever he sees me he starts disrespecting me. Calling me the 'F' word. The only difference yesterday was that I said, 'Yeah, I'm proud.'"

Victor claimed that Smith hit him with a snow shovel, after which he grabbed the shovel and hit back. Blows were exchanged in the incident, which took place outside the Boston Police Headquarters, and eventually Smith pulled out a box cutter, slashing Victor across the eye.

"I don't think that he expected me to fight him back," Victor said. "When he realized that I was fighting him back, that's when he stopped real quick, went in his pocket and whipped it out — the box cutter."

A police cadet and dispatcher witnessed the attack and called for officers to respond, after which Victor was taken to a hospital, where he received 25 stitches. His injuries were not life-threatening.

"It triggers him whenever he sees me because I live my life openly and he can't do the same for whatever reason," Victor said. "That like drives him nuts."
